Blake Manufacturing is the original manufacturer of this unique CoAxial Indicator Centering device that easily locates the center of your work piece. Mr. John Blake filed his patent in 1955 & a couple years later (1957) US Patent Number 2814124 was successfully issued! Soon thereafter Blake Manufacturing was born! Today, most machinists know Blake Coaxial Indicators as the Premier Quality Brand for this type of CoAxial Indicator Centering device.
What is a Coaxial Indicator & What is it used for?
The BLAKE COAXIAL INDICATOR is a device that provides a simplified method for centering a workpiece or fixture on HORIZONTAL or VERTICAL machines, EXTERNAL or INTERNAL diameters and also with N/C, EDM and other hard-to-turn spindles.
The face of the indicator remains stationary in any desired position while the machine spindle rotates, thus leaving the operator with both hands free to accurately position the machine table by coordinated movement of the table positioning controls while observing the indicator hand reaction. (Indicator hand travel diminishes as location error is reduced to a point where the hand stands still, indicating coaxial alignment of the diameter being checked with the spindle axis)
By using the COAXIAL INDICATOR with the machine spindle running, exact operating conditions are more nearly simulated for the centering operation since the influence of power transmission, lubricant flow, bearing characteristics and torque are integrated into the indicator reading.

The Blake COAXIAL (co-ax) indicator is primarily as a precision centering instrument for locating a work piece on a horizontal or vertical machine tool while the spindle rotates under power. Learn how to use a Blake coaxial indicator.
The Blake COAXIAL (co-ax) indicator is equally useful for positioning in the situation where it may be desirable to turn the spindle by hand the direction and distance of location error may be determined thus:
DIRECTION is indicated by the radial position of the feeler when the hand is at its high, or low, point of travel.
DISTANCE is indicated by the total travel of the indicator hand thru one full revolution of the machine spindle.

SET-UP and HOW TO USE A COAXIAL INDICATOR
NOTE: STEPS 5 & 6 will need to be repeated until needle movement reduces to ZERO movement. )The Blake CO-AX (co-axial) indicator is fitted and tested for operation of at least 58° F. Bearing/bushing stiffness may be present at lower temperatures.
DIAL GRADUTAION is divided such that each division represents .0005 inch of AXIS OFFSET (deviation from true location) when the feeler is tracing a diameter of two inches. (Varies slightly with feeler angle.) [Note: Dial graduation is different for 801-E Economy model.]
CARE
Under normal conditions The Blake COAXIAL (co-ax) indicator should require no servicing and only the consideration in use and handling due any precision instrument. Allowance for familiarization should be made when it is first being used.

The graduation increments changes based on the feeler length and workpiece diameter size as listed in above chart.
The Blake COAXIAL INDICATOR is a centering device. It requires a reading of both sides of the bore or boss in each axis, to arrive at the center. Its sole function is to find center. It is NEVER to be used as a measuring instrument.
You cannot certify the COAXIAL INDICATOR on a surface plate. It must be put in a spindle of a machine that it would normally be used in and indicate a precision ring or plug. Then remove it and use a .0001 indicator to check that your are on center.
The CO-AX INDICATOR is made to be used under power. When checking the CO-AX position with a test indicator, the spindle should be rotated manually for both indicators due to the fact that spindle torque under power on some machines will give a different reading for center.
